This 9 club set of Cobra Greg Norman Signature Forged Cavity Back Irons, spanning iron through pitching wedge, represents a short but nevertheless important little chapter in golf equipment history.
Introduced in 1991, these irons were the result of a collaboration between Cobra Golf and then-world number one Greg Norman, who not only endorsed the brand but also acquired a 12% stake in the company. (Shocking.)
Norman’s involvement led to the development of Cobra’s first line of forged irons, including both muscle back (MB) and cavity back (CB) models. No comment on fortunes of company afterwards- but these irons we have here were simply not set up for commercial success.
————
The design of these irons features a shallow cavity back, offering a balance between the traditional feel of a blade and the added forgiveness of perimeter weighting. The minimal offset and compact head size cater to skilled players seeking precision and workability. The subtle cavity provides just enough assistance on off-center hits without compromising the feedback desired by low-handicap golfers.
Crafted during a time when Japanese forging was particularly renowned for its quality, these irons are known for their soft feel and consistent performance. The clean aesthetics, highlighted by Norman’s signature in the cavity, reflect the understated elegance preferred by many traditionalists. Collectors and enthusiasts often regard these irons as a testament to Cobra’s commitment to quality and innovation during the early ’90s.
Getting to strip these raw was tremendously helpful when assessing their quality.
Notably, Greg Norman used Cobra irons to secure his victory at the 1993 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s, marking the first major championship won with Cobra irons. This achievement further solidified the reputation of the Greg Norman Signature series among professionals and (some) amateurs alike - collectors are now keeping these in their “10 year closets” we’ve noticed and we’ll see how that plays out for them, for now Just play them!
